On The Bricks Free Concert Series To Face Competition

Downtown Atlanta seems to be the place for free outdoor concerts. So much so that the successful On the Bricks free Friday night summer concert series in Atlanta's Olympic Park, has a potential competitor.

Mad Booking's Marcie Allen, creator of the series, will be going bat to bat with her former radio partner for the event, 99X, who is teaming with Clear Channel Entertainment (formerly Concerts/Southern/SFX) to stage its own free Friday night concert series next summer. If that wasn't bad enough, the most talked about property to hold it is right across the street in vacant property owned by Coca-Cola Co.

According to Chris Williams, 99X's program director, three downtown sites are being considered. "We felt we did a very large percentage of the event," Williams told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution of this summer's series. "We booked the acts, and all the sponsorships brought to the table were through our relationships."

Williams said they decided to work with Clear Channel next year instead of Mad Booking because, "We want to make this event bigger and better. We want to keep the momentum."

Allen told the paper, "The reason On The Bricks is successful is because everyone takes ownership of it," and noted that the change in radio stations was for a more diverse audience. Allen will be working with the more hits-oriented WSTR-Star 94 "I don't really look at another event as competing," Allen said. "I'm not going to get caught up in all the politics. I'm focusing on my event."
