NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — The already hugely popular Police reunion tour is scheduled to hit New York City this weekend, and could be the most hotly anticipated stop at Madison Square Garden ever.
The sold out Friday night concert has become the all-time best-selling event for ticket resellers, according to StubHub. The tour is also the biggest selling in the online secondary ticketing service’s history.
StubHub estimates that the average ticket for any Police show is going for $212 apiece, according to New York Newsday, more than doubling the gross sales of Madonna’s 2006 tour and triple sales of U2’s 2005/2006 tour, the previous leaders. Tickets for Friday night’s New York show, the second in a three-night sold-out run at MSG, are going for as much as $14,000 a pair.
Reviews of the tour were mixed at the start, with even drummer Stewart Copeland remarking after an early show: “This is unbelievably lame. We are the mighty Police and we are totally at sea.” Recent gigs, however, including their closing slot at the Live Earth New York show and appearances at Fenway Park in Boston, have garnered much higher praise. –by CelebrityAccess Staff Writers
