LA County Looks At Age Restrictions For EDM Events

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — L.A. County government approved new guidelines for concerts and music events at taxpayer-owned venues in the county with a particular focus on EDM that may see events restricted to a 21-and over crowd.

According to LA Weekly, the new guidelines would require that promoters of events of more than 10,000 people will need to submit a plan 120 days in advance to an assessment team made up of fire, sheriff's, medical, public health and other top county officials who can make a determination on age minimums

The team will make a "threat assessment" based on the nature of the event and the possibility of drug use, medical emergencies and other factors, according to a draft of the new rules.

The proposed new rules come after a series of drug-related fatalities at EDM events, including the deaths of two teenagers at the Hard Summer festival at the Fairplex in Pomona in August.

"Protecting the health and safety of L.A. County residents and visitors attending mass gatherings at our County Fairgrounds, and parks and recreation spaces is the overarching goal," Supervisor Hilda Solis said, according to LA Weekly. "Whether this means more water and medical stations, or increasing first responder availability in the surrounding community, today’s ordinance achieves this goal.

"With proper planning and coordination," she said, "we will reduce the risk of loss of life and harm to event attendees." – Staff Writers
