WASHINGTON D.C. (CelebrityAccess) — Spotify took a key step towards making its hardware bid a reality on Tuesday when they registered with the Federal Communications Commission.
In February, a number of Spotify’s customers reported receiving an offer from the streaming service for a new device that would be included with a monthly subscription service with a one-year commitment.
The device, which reports suggest would allow users to stream content from Spotify in their cars without a cellphone, appeared to be a circular knob with side-mounted control buttons.
The device was bandied about on Reddit by a group of users who claimed to have received an offer for the device in exchange for a year-long subscription commitment to Spotify and was mentioned on Spotify’s own forums, where forum administrators dismissed it as a test.
In recent months, Spotify has also been hiring technical staffers for a variety of hardware-related projects, including voice commands on smartphones, according to The Verge.
Spotify already has a footprint in the car market and has deployed a custom-built Spotify app for Cadillacs and is currently integrated into both Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto platforms.
A rep for Spotify did not respond to a request for comment.
