JAPAN (CelebrityAccess) Cinema ticket prices in Japan rose for the first time in 26 years as two of the largest multiplex operators raised their pricing starting Jun 1.

Both Toho Cinemas and 109 Cinemas raised their regular ticket price by just less than a dollar  (100 yen) to $17.50 (1,900 yen). Other chains raised the price of some discount tickets or regular admissions at some locations, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The average price has ben $12.15 because of discounts for students, women, seniors, married couples over 50 and for the average moviegoer during certain days of the month. Prices have been the same since 1993, with prices actually dropping in 1996.
