SYDNEY, NSW (CelebrityAccess) — Hamilton, one of the most successful musicals of the century, is heading to Sydney thanks to a little help from the government of New South Wales.
While the NSW Government did not detail just how much they spent to help bring the production to Sydney, they fended off intense competition from other markets, including Melbourne, as well as other markets in Southeast Asia.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the province expects more than 130,000 people to turn out to see Hamilton, and projects that the production will bring up to 350 jobs and generate more than $84 million in visitor expenditure to the region.
“This is a huge win for NSW,” Ms. Berejiklian said. “Hamilton coming to Sydney demonstrates the global appeal of the Harbour City.”
“The musical is one of the most talked about Broadway shows, achieving massive success with a Grammy Award, Pulitzer Prize and a number of Tony Awards,” she added.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, Hamilton is the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary.
Based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Hamilton, the production features music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire.
Hamilton boldly blends American history with a healthy dollop of hip-hop, jazz and blues, and Broadway-style show tunes to hold up a mirror to modern American society, and in the process transforms what might have been a leaden period piece to theatrical gold.
Hamilton premiered on Broadway in August 2015 and was immediately a smash hit. The production took home 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album.
It is also currently playing on tour in the US and in London’s West End, where it opened in January 2017 winning seven Olivier Awards.
Hamilton will premier at the Sydney Lyric Theatre starting in March 2021.
