SEATTLE (CelebrityAccess) Seattle’s legendary Showbox venue has been saved, at least temporarily, from the wrecking ball by the Seattle city council.

The council approved a measure by an 8-0 vote to include the Showbox in the Pike Place Market historic district, according to KOMO News. The vote temporarily halts plans to construct a 44-story building on the site by development company Omni Group. The vote also gives Showbox supporters 10 months to come up with a plan to save the venue.

Activists include Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses, Macklemore and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, all of whom have led the #savetheshowbox movement. More than 150 local and national artists signed an open letter urging residents to protect the venue from the wrecking ball. An online petition has garnered more than 93,000 signatures, according to KOMO.

The Showbox has been at its current location for nearly 80 years and has hosted everyone from Duke Ellington and Mae West to The Police, Blondie, Daft Punk and Lady Gaga.
