LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Another weekend, and another endlessly revived franchise tops the weekend box office. This time, it’s Universal’s “Fast and Furious franchise turn, with the latest installment “Fast and Furious: Presents Hobbs and Shaw” earning an estimated $60.8 million from North American cinemas, according to Comscore.
A spin-off of the increasingly long-in-the-tooth Fast & Furious franchise, Hobbs & Shaw’s cast teams Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham up for the buddy action film, with supporting from Vanessa Kirby who plays Statham’s sister, along with Idris Elba, Helen Mirren, Eddie Marsan & Eiza Gonzalez.
Internationally, the film earned an estimated $120.0M in 63 territories for a global debut of $180.8M.
Now in its third weekend, Disney’s “The Lion King” takes in $38.246 million for a North American cume through Sunday of $430.9 million, bringing its worldwide cumulative gross to $1,195.8M.
Rounding out the top 3 was Sony’s presentation of Quentin Tarantino’s 9th film, “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” which added $20.025 million in its second weekend for a total cume to date through Sunday of $78.842 million.
