Warner Records Sues Avenged Sevenfold

BURBANK, CA (VIP NEWS) — Avenged Sevenfold are trying to exit their contract with Warner after releasing four albums on the label since 2005, and are now being sued for damages.

The band are trying to use California`s “seven-year rule” to do so, which allows the exit from personal contracts after seven years have passed, but only under certain circumstances.

According to Billboard, the 70-year-old law allowing the exit of an agreement after seven years was amended in the 1980s following record industry lobbying. The amendment allows record companies to recoup profits potential profits on albums that would have been completed under the contract.

Claims have to be made within 45 days of an artist signing that they want to terminate.

“Avenged Sevenfold recently exercised the rights given them by this law and ended its recording agreement with Warner Bros. Records,” said the band’s attorney, Howard E. King in a statement. Since the 2004 contract was signed, King also cites "multiple regime changes" at the label, which "led to dramatic turnover at every level of the company, to the point where no one on the current A&R staff has even a nodding relationship with the band."
