'Transformers' Overcomes Bad Reviews To Top Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Despite a relatively soft opening in North America, Paramount's "Transformers: The Last Knight" took top honors at the box office over the weekend, earning an estimated $45.3M and $241.5M as itr debuted in 41 markets around the world.

Directed by Michael Bey, and starring Mark Wahlberg, Josh Duhamel, Stanley Tucci and Anthony Hopkins, "Transformers" was the 4th sequel for the venerable sci-fi series, which first brought the Hasbro toy brand to the big screens in 2007.

"Transformers" debut weekend revenue was the lowest of all five of the franchise's movies and came in the face of dreadful reviews from critics, with meta-review site Rotten Tomatoes reporting that just 15% of professional critics gave the film a thumb's up.

Warner Bros. superhero bashup "Wonder Woman" held on at #2 over the weekend, adding $25.2M domestically and $45.7M worldwide, pushing its global cumulative gross over 650m, making it the highest grossing movie ever directed by a woman.

Disney/Pixar's animated comedy "Cars 3" held on to the #3 spot, driving its revenue totals up by $25.2M domestically and $37.1M worldwide.
