The Stones Rock Havana

HAVANA, Cuba (CelebrityAccess) — The Rolling Stones performed in front of an estimated crowd of 1.2 million fans in Havana on Friday night, marking the time the English band has ever played in Cuba.

The free open-air concert took place at at Ciudad Deportiva de la Habana, a major sports complex which held a reported crowd of 700,000 fans, as well as another 500,000 listening outside of the venue.

Rock music was banned in the country following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, but that prohibition was relaxed in the early 1980s as Cuba began to reorient towards a tourism-based economy. Other artists who have performed in Cuba since the thaw in diplomatic relations between the island nation and the U.S. include Major Lazer earlier this year and an impromptu tour by the Australian band Dead Daisies late last year.

"Cuba has… so many kinds of music, all of it brilliant," Mick Jagger said in a short video of the concert filmed by JA Digital. "It was inevitable that we would play here one day."
