Romanian Government Unseated Following Nightclub Fire

BUCHAREST, Romania (CelebrityAccess) — A wave of popular outrage against government corruption in the wake of a tragic nightclub fire in Bucharest that left 32 dead, has unseated the nation's government.

According to the New York Times, an estimated 20,000 Romanians took to the streets of Bucharest on Tuesday night, demanding political change. The outcry was sufficient that Prime Minister Victor Ponta resigned the following day, saying that he recognized “legitimate anger in society.”

National grief over the nightclub fire metastasized into anger over the lax enforcement of regulations at the nightclub that seemingly led to the fire.

“People died, and their deaths were mainly caused by corruption,” Madalina Enache, a 28-year-old protestor told the New York Times. “The only ones arrested so far are the owners of the club, not the politicians who are most responsible,” she said. “This government will just be replaced by others from the same parties. We want change. All the system is corrupt. We want to change it all.” – Staff Writers
