Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominations Announced

The Ramones, the Sex Pistols, Talking Heads and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, all eligible for the first time for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, were nominated for the 2002 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. To be eligible, an artist had to release an album at least 25 years ago (1977).

Six other artists were also nominated for the first time but could have been nominated in previous years: Jackson Browne, the Dells, the 5 Royales, Gram Parsons, the Chantels and Isaac Hayes. The Dells and the 5 Royales each released their first music in 1953 while Browne issued his first disk in 1972.

The rest of the 16 nominees have previously been on the final ballot but never garnered enough votes to be enshrined: Gene Pitney (seventh nomination), Black Sabbath (fifth), Lynyrd Skynyrd and Brenda Lee (third each) and AC/DC and Patti Smith (second each). Patti Smith was nominated again as a solo artist even though the Patti Smith Group was also on the nominating ballot for the first time.

Six-to-eight artists are expected to be enshrined when the inductees are announced in December with the induction ceremony to be held in New York next March.
