RIAA Wins $17 Million Lawsuit Against Grooveshark Clone

WASHINGTON, DC (Hypebot) – After Grooveshark was shut down by music industry lawsuits, a sophisticated clone site launched. It jumped from domain to domain for several weeks, but was eventually shut down.

The RIAA has won another major piracy lawsuit. The music trade group has won a case against a now defunct Grooveshark clone in New York federal court. The judge granted the RIAA and its major label members more than $13 million in piracy damages along with another $4 million for "willful counterfeiting," reports TorrentFreak.

The judgement reads:

"Defendants have engaged in willful copyright infringement of Plaintiffs’ copyrights through the Counterfeit Service, which allows users to download and stream infringing copies of Plaintiffs’ copyrighted sound recordings directly from servers operated or controlled by Defendants, in violation of Plaintiffs’ copyrights.”
