Renovation Plans For Kansas Expocentre Moving Forward With RFQ

TOPEKA, KS (CelebrityAccess) – Plans to renovate the 29-year-old Kansas Expocentre moved a step closer to fruition when the Shawnee County Commission approved an official Request for Quote to be sent to area architects. The RFQ will define and prioritize the scope of the $45 million, multi-year project to expand and update the Expocentre facilities.

The first phase, beginning in 2017, will update aging mechanical components, many of which are original to the main buildings constructed in 1986. Also scheduled for the first phase is replacement of the fixed seating in Landon Arena.

“The Expocentre is a valuable asset that we continue to update and improve,” said Commissioner Shelly Buhler. “The RFQ enables us to take that first step for the 45 million dollar investment.”

The renovation project was approved by voters in 2014 as part of the countywide half-cent sales tax extension which goes into effect January 1, 2017. In the past month, both the Topeka City Council and Shawnee County Commission approved a required interlocal agreement. This allowed the county to move forward with the RFQ for the Kansas Expocentre.

“We’re excited to get moving with the renovation plans,” said Jeff Chabon, Kansas Expocentre/SMG General Manager. “We have a great facility here, but it needs to be updated and expanded. Both our clients and the community will appreciate the changes once construction gets underway.”
