Metallica Drops WMG, Launches Their Own Label

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — Heavy metal icons Metallica have left their longtime label home at Warner to launch their own indie label, Blackened Recordings.

Going forward, Blackened will handle the band’s promotional efforts on all fronts. According to Billboard, the label will be distributed through Warner’s reprinter Rhino Entertainment and the band will also license releases to Universal Music Group for international.

Metallica already has their first release in the pipeline with the "Quebec Magnetic” DVD, which is set to drop on December 10th.

The deal comes about as Metallica resumes ownership of their masters, including long form videos as the result of their 1994 contract with Warner Music.

“Forming Blackened Recordings is the ultimate in independence, putting us in the driver's seat of our own creative destiny. We're looking forward to making more music and getting it all out to you in our own unique way,” a spokesman for the band said in a statement on the group’s website. – CelebrityAccess Staff Writers
