Mannheim Steamroller Founder Drops Omaha Shed

Chip Davis, New Age composer and founder of Mannheim Steamroller, has abandoned his five-year plans to build a 17,000-seat, $35 million amphitheater in Omaha, Neb., because of court challenges from a neighboring golf course.

Lawsuits had been filed by Nebco, Inc., the owner of the adjacent Quarry Oaks golf course, which felt the threat of excessive noise and traffic jams in the area. Davis believed the continuing threat of litigation would tie up the amphitheater in the courts for years. The project also included plans for a children's music camp, a hotel, restaurants and beer garden on 173 acres that Davis purchased in 1997.
