Labels Mull Pulling Out Of IFPI

NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess MediaWire) — EMI may be looking to cut itself loose from from a major record label trade organization, the IFPI.

According to a report in Variety, the label in December sent a letter to the IFPI, stating that they intended to stop funding and leave the association if the aims of the trade group were not in line with the interests of EMI.

And it may not just be EMI who's pondering jumping ship. Sources close to the negotiations have said that all four of the major labels are also involved in the negotiations, with the apparent intent of forcing IFPI to alter its course.

Its too early to tell if EMI's notification letter was sent merely to bolster their argument or of they actually intend to exit, but the letter cited a March 31st cut-off date for funding. It may be bluster however as the IFPI acts as a collection agent for labels in some countries.

So what exactly are the interests of EMI? One of the ideas that has been discussed is a merger between the RIAA and the IFPI. – CelebrityAccess Staff Writers
