NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) — Director and producer Kamilah Forbes has been named as executive producer at the famed Apollo Theater.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Ms. Forbes, 39 years old, is a co-founder and the artistic director of the urban arts nonprofit Hi-ARTS, previously known as the Hip-Hop Theater Festival.
Previous work by Ms. Forbes includes producing a global hip-hop festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and serving as the associate director for the Tupac Shakur-inspired musical “Holler if Ya Hear Me” and a 2014 revival of “A Raisin in the Sun.”
As well, she produced HBO's Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam.
Forbes is replacing Mikki Shepard, who first joined the Apollo organization in 2006 as a consultant.
“Mikki really laid the foundation for us in the performing arts and arts programming space,” Apollo president Jonelle Procope told the WSJ. “I look to Kamilah to take us to the next level artistically.” – Staff Writers
