George Wein To Be Honored By Jazz at Lincoln Center


Jazz impresario George Wein will receive the Award for Lifetime Achievement from Jazz at Lincoln Center on Nov. 12 at Avery Fisher Hall in New York. The Award for Artistic Excellence will be presented to the late Latin jazz bandleader, composer and arranger Chico O'Farrill while the Award for Leadership will be presented to Jazz at Lincoln Center founding chairman Gordon J. Davis.

Previous recipients of the Award for Artistic Excellence are Illinois Jacquet, John Lewis, Benny Carter, Oscar Peterson and Lionel Hampton. Previous recipients of the Award of Leadership are Jack & Susan Rudin, Irene Diamond, June Noble Larkin, Ahmet Ertegun and George Weissman.

The Sixth Annual Awards Gala and Benefit Concert "The Spirit of Tito Puente" will feature the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and the Tito Puente Orchestra led by Jose Madera and Johnny Rodriquez.

The event will be hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center board member Ed Bradley, the CBS News correspondent. The event is sponsored in part by Prudential Securities, which will also make it possible for World Trade Center rescue workers and their families to attend the concert through a special grant.
