England Stages Own Farm Aid

England is staging its own Farm Aid on Oct. 27 with Coldplay, Toploader and Reef at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, to raise money for farmers and rural communities hit by the foot-and-mouth epidemic that has devastated the country's livestock industry. The organizers hope to attract 50,000 people to the benefit event.

Michael Eavis, a farmer and the organizer of the world-famous Glastonbury music festival, hopes to bring attention to the problem hurting the livelihoods of thousands farmers in Britain. "I see this concert not only as a fund-raiser for lots of desperate farmers affected by foot-and-mouth but as a new beginning in terms of environmental and sustainable policies for farming for the future," Eavis said in a statement.

He also hopes the concert will also help make amends for the cancellation of this year's Glastonbury Festival — itself a victim of the epidemic.
