Disney's Iger To Lead Carson Stadium Project

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Disney Chairman and CEO Robert Iger has been tapped by the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders to lead a joint venture to build a proposed $1.7 billion football stadium in Carson, California.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Iger has been named as the non-executive chairman of the joint venture, Carson Holdings LLC, and will lead negotiations with the City of Carson for the project. Iger will also handle hiring of a president for the project and provide strategic guidance on the stadium's profile, services and fan experiences, the Times reported.

“Bob Iger’s inclusion as a the chair and the visionary force behind the Carson project is a game-changer,” said Carmen Policy, executive director of Carson Holdings, LLC. “We now have the kind of leadership and expertise that should calm any concerns about any NFL teams going into L.A. and getting off on the right foot and pursuing the right course. And certainly if you’re going to do two teams it really lends a layer of talent and experience, plus unbelievable know-how to the whole effort.

“Who could we get better to guarantee fan experience than the man who runs the happiest place on earth?”

The joint venture's proposed Carson stadium would serve as a home for both the Chargers and the Raiders, and is in competition with St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke's proposed $1.86 billion stadium project in Inglewood.

According to ESPN, Iger is taking a token salary of $1 for his efforts on behalf of Carson Holdings, but the deal gives Iger an opportunity to purchase a small stake in either team. He has reportedly agreed not to exercise the option while he is chairman at Disney. His contract with the entertainment giant runs through 2018. – Staff Writers
