Clubs, Stores Help WTC Rescue Effort

The Knitting Factory, located 11 blocks north of the World Trade Center, was closed to the public for over a week after the terrorist attacks on September 11, but the jazz club was active nonetheless. Its bar served as a lounge for firefighters and rescue workers between shifts. The club feared it would have to close down permanently if it did reopen quickly; it reopened to the public on Sept. 20.

J&R Music World, located a couple of blocks west of the World Trade Center, was closed for the first time in 30 years. It was the headquarters for search and rescue by the New York Fire Department. By the end of the month, the music and electronics store still had not reopened.
