Clear Channel and Broadway Theatricals


Clear Channel Entertainment becomes a presence on Broadway via its purchase of SFX , which had bought Pace Theatricals and Livent. According to the New York Times, the conglomerate has invested in more than 130 Broadway and touring productions since 1983.

Clear Channel is currently represented on Broadway as a producer of "The Producers" and "Sweet Smell of Success;" associate producer of "Chicago," "The Crucible," "The Graduate" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie;" and investor in "Oklahoma!" and "Rent." Clear Channel has a 25 percent share of "The Producers."

Two new musicals are due to open this year on Broadway with Clear Channel involvement: associate producer in "Hairspray," a new musical based on the John Waters' 1988 movie and set to open in August and investor in "Movin' On," a new musical conceived by Billy Joel and Twill Thrall and due to open in October.

Future productions now in development from Clear Channel include "An American in Paris," "A Bronx Tale,": based upon the 1993 movie; "Dracula," an original musical; "A Star Is Born;" "Camille Called" based on the 1988 French film; an untitled project with Martin Short; and untitled project based upon the music of Bob Marley.
