Beatport Announces Promotions

DENVER (CelebrityAccess) Electronic music platform Beatport has announced two promotions to its executive staff.

Jonathan Steffan was promoted from senior VP of technology to chief information officer, where he will oversee infrastructure engineering and data services among other responsibilities.

Terry Weerasinghe was promoted from senior VP of music, marketing & analytics to chief product officer and will oversee all product development along with marketing, artist and label relations.

Both promotions were announced Jan. 16 by Robb McDaniels, who joined the company as CEO in October. Steffan will work from the Denver office, Weerasinghe, who joined Beatport from Traktor in 2013, will work from the Berlin office.

“Successful companies are born from intelligent, passionate people, and Jonathan and Terry exemplify these traits,” McDaniels said in a statement. “If we are going to transform Beatport from a simple download store to a next generation ecommerce platform, we need leadership and vision from experienced executives like these two gentlemen.”

Beatport is a subsidiary of LiveStyle, which rose from the ashes of SFX Entertainment and is now run by former AEG Entertainment chief Randy Phillips. When SFX filed for bankruptcy protection in 2016, there was speculation that Beatport, the popular electronic streaming service that SFX bought for $50 million, would be sold off, with 20 suitors lined up at the time, according to Forbes. Instead, Beatport said it was “business as usual.”

Yesterday’s announcement said Beatport was “planning on big improvements to its product offering by Q3 2018 and has been mobilizing to support this new direction” and “making renewed investments in its core technologies and systems.”
