LONDON (CelebrityAccess) — Ed Sheeran’s manager Stuart Camp confirmed rumors that Princess Beatrice nearly took pop icon Ed Sheeran’s eye out with a sword at a dinner party four years ago.
The rumor, which was first reported by the Sun in 2016, claimed that Sheeran, along with 20 other guests, including recording artist James Blunt, attended a dinner party with the Royals, including Princess Beatrice and her mom Sarah Ferguson.
According to the Sun’s source, during the dinner, Blunt joked that he would like to be knighted, prompting Beatrice to take a ceremonial sword off the wall. However, instead of tapping Blunt on the shoulder with the blade in the traditional form, she swung it and accidentally struck Sheeran, who she did not realize was standing behind her.
The blade struck Sheeran in the face, leaving a gash just a few inches below his right eye. He was taken to the hospital where the gash was stitched closed, but he still bears the scar.
While the story was reported in 2016, it was not confirmed until this week when Sheeran’s manager Stuart Camp discussed the incident during an interview with the Straight Up Podcast.
According to Camp, he received a call from Buckingham Palace after the incident and has not discussed it since then.
“I got quite protective over that,” Camp said. “Because we’ve never publicly commented on it. But certain people said, ‘Oh, you should lie and say it wasn’t her and say it was someone else.’”
“I said, well, we’re not telling anyone anything. I’m not lying, just because someone’s a fucking idiot,” he continued. “Because they’re thinking, yeah, I will get paralytic and take a sword off the wall. You’re just asking for trouble. You know, we’ve not heard hide nor hair from her since.”
Sheeran himself has previously discussed the incident without identifying Beatrice as the culprit. In an interview with Absolute Radio in 2017, he said:
“I got hit in the face, and I was like, all right, OK, and then started carrying on. And then I looked down at my shirt and it was just completely covered in blood. And everyone was kind of gaping open-mouthed at me,” Sheeran said. “What, have I got a nosebleed or something? What’s happened?”
