(CelebrityAccess) — The United Nations’ High Note Global Initiative announced that Cyndi Lauper will be the recipient of its 2019 High Note Global Prize.

Lauper is being recognized for her efforts as a vocal supporter and advocate for LGBTQ rights.

In 2008, Lauper co-founded the LGBTQ rights advocacy True Colors United after learning that while 10% of American youth identify themselves as LGBTQ, up to 40% of American youth experiencing homelessness do so. The organization works to prevent and end youth homelessness, focusing on the challenges faced by LGBTQ youth.

“Musicians hold a special place in society, as they have the ability to inspire people to action. We are proud to support The High Note Global Initiative and The High Note Global Prize in an effort to galvanize global awareness of the importance of human rights, and at the same time honor artists who passionately use their work to promote and protect the rights of others,” said Laurent Sauveur, Chief External Outreach, UN Human Rights.
