NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) – Less than a week after the tragic news broke that singer-songwriter and poet David Berman, best known for co-founding indie rock band Silver Jews, had passed away at the age of 52, an anonymous law enforcement official told The New York Times that Berman was found in an apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn and pronounced dead at the scene. A spokeswoman for the city’s medical examiner confirmed his death as suicide by hanging.
In both interviews with the press and his lyrics, Berman was open about his struggles with treatment-resistant depression and addiction, including a previous suicide attempt by overdose in 2003.
In a statement to the press, the artist’s father, Richard Berman said: “Despite his difficulties, he always remained my special son. I will miss him more than he was able to realize.”
Last month, Berman released the self-titled debut for his newest project, Purple Mountains, to much acclaim. A North American tour in support of the album was scheduled to begin on Saturday (August 10).
