(CelebrityAccess) –Disney scored yet another in an increasingly large list of hits this weekend as a re-make of the beloved classic animated film “The Lion King” topped the worldwide box office.
Lion King which opened in several foreign markets last week roared to a $185.0 million North American debut. Combined with the weekend’s haul from 52 territories worldwide, the film grossed $454.4M at the global box office.
The PG-rated film features a large cast that includes Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Seth Rogen, James Earl Jones, John Kani, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Florence Kasumba, John Oliver, Keegan-Michael Key, Billy Eichner, Eric Andre, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph.
Lion King is directed by Jon Favreau, whose previous credits include Elf (2003), several installments of Iron Man and the 2016 Jungle Book re-make, which raked in almost $1bn for Disney.
Last week’s champion, Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home continued to perform as well, generating $21.0 million from North American theaters through Sunday for a domestic cume of $319.659 million.
Strong showings in July have almost helped to shake off a slump in ticket sales. At the start of the month, aggregate box office take for 2019 was almost 10% lower than 2018, but blockbusters such as Lion King have helped to pare that back to just about 2%.
