(CelebrityAccess) — With the debut of her first solo album on the horizon, former Alabama Shakes co-founder, guitarist and lead vocalist Brittany Howard announced plans for a solo tour.
The tour, which kicks off in August at the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC, will see Howard perform at theaters across the U.S. before wrapping on October 13th at the Afropunk Festival in Atlanta.
The Alabama Shakes first broke through in 2012 with “Hold On” and continued their success in 2015, winning four Grammy Awards for their sophomore album Sound & Color, including Best Alternative Music Album, Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, as well as Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for “Don’t Wanna Fight”.
Howard has since gone on to launch several solo projects, and perhaps surprisingly, in light of the Alabama Shakes success, put the group on hiatus for now. When asked in a recent interview by Rolling Stone why she was venturing out on her own, Howard said she was after creative control.
“I’m going to do this record by myself,” Howard told Rolling Stone “I knew that I needed to be in control of everything: the music, the arrangements, all that stuff. And when am I going to do it if not now?”
Her solo album, “Jamie” is due to hit the shelves, digital or otherwise on Sept. 20.
“I wrote this record as a process of healing. Every song, I confront something within me or beyond me. Things that are hard or impossible to change, words and music to describe what I’m not good at conveying to those I love, or a name that hurts to be said: Jaime,” Howard wrote in a message announcing the new album.
“I dedicated the title of this record to my sister who passed away as a teenager. She was a musician too. I did this so her name would no longer bring me memories of sadness and as a way to thank her for passing on to me everything she loved: music, art, creativity,” Howard added.
