DOVER, UK (CelebrityAccess) — Recording artist Rod Stewart appeared as a surprise guest at a tribute to D-Day veterans, performing his hit Sailing for an audience of 250 vets and their families.

The show took place aboard the MV Boudicca, a cruise ship chartered by Royal British Legion to carry the veteran’s reunion to Normandy ahead of the 75th anniversary of the 1944 invasion of Europe.

“I have to tell you I’m truly delighted to be coming down to Dover today to send our wonderful, brave soldiers off to the beaches of Normandy. Our heroes! It’s going to be a great day,” Stewart, who was born in 1944, told the audience in a video greeting.

Following the performance, Stewart made himself available for photographs and to meet the traveling veterans and their families.

Stewart’s wife Penny served as the official photographer for the event, which was staged by Hello Magazine.
