Godzilla Crushes The Weekend Box Office With $179 Million Debut

(CelebrityAccess) — Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” ruled the weekend box office, earning an estimated $49 million in its North American debut, according to Comscore.

A sequel to previous entries in the revived giant movie monsters cinematic universe that includes “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island”, the film stars Vera Farmiga, Sally Hawkins, Millie Bobby Brown, Charles Dance, David Strathairn, Kyle Chandler, CCH Pounder, and Ken Watanabe, with direction from Michael Dougherty.

Internationally, the film earned an estimated $179M worldwide on a total of about 51,855 screens.

Last week’s top film, “Aladdin,” slid to second place but still earned a respectable $42.335 million in North American theaters and $185.0 million worldwide, according to Comscore The weekend’s results bring Aladdin’s worldwide cumulative gross to $445.9M, virtually guaranteeing that we’ll be seeing even more live action reboots of Disney IP.

Universal’s horror film “Ma” debuted to an estimated $18.2M North American debut. “Ma” stars Octavia Spencer in the lead role as a loner who gets into terrifying trouble in a small town, with support from Juliette Lewis, Allison Janney, Missi Pyle, and Luke Evans, among others.

Now in its third week in North American cinemas, “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” tacked on $11.1M from North American audiences, bringing its cume to $125.752 million.
