COSTA DEL SOL, Spain (CelebrityAccess) Freddie Starr, 76, former lead singer of Merseybeat band The Midniters and a one-time star of UK television, was found dead in his apartment in Costa Del Sol, Spain, May 9.

“His carer found him dead in his chair at around 3.30pm.

“Police arrived first and then later an ambulance arrived and he was taken away,” a neighbor told the Daily Mirror. “His next door neighbor who is a nurse said he was definitely dead. She said she thinks he may have suffered a heart attack.”

Another neighbor said, “He’s been quite ill ever since he moved in and has barely left his apartment since moving in a couple of years ago. He would just sit indoors all day long and he never had any visitors. It’s so tragic.”

Starr became famous in the 1970s after appearing on the television show “Opportunity Knocks” and “The Royal Variety Performance.” He went on to star in his own TV shows, “The Freddy Starr Show” and “An Audience with Freddie Starr” plus hosted game shows like “Beat The Crusher” and appeared on “I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!” in 2011. He was cut out of the show when producers feared he would die on camera. He had been recovering from quadruple bypass surgery and collapsed while filming.

In the 1970s and ’80s, he was one of the highest paid stars on television.

Starr was accused of sex abuse and groping throughout his career as part of 1990s operation Operation Yewtree, an accusation that he said made him consider suicide.
