DETROIT (CelebrityAccess) The famed, aged Joe Louis Arena in Detroit is on the verge of destruction, with a demolition scheduled in four weeks.

“They’ll start on the inside of the facility and work their way out,” Tyrone Clifton, of Detroit Building Authority, told the Detroit News. “It won’t be anything glamorous like the Hudson’s site. They’ll start to deconstruct the building inside, taking materials down. There will be truckloads of stuff going out.”

Destruction was picked over implosion partly because of the building’s location along the Detroit River, plus other details.

The Joe Louis Arena has a long history.  It was completed in 1979 at a cost of $57 million and was the longtime home of the NHL’s Red Wings and was introduced to the market with a concert by Rush. It’s also, incidentally, where Nancy Kerrigan got hit on the knee in an attack that may have involved fellow skating competitor Tonya Harding.
