LONDON (CelebrityAccess) – Andy Anderson, former drummer for the Cure, has passed away of terminal cancer at the age of 68.
Anderson, originally from Essex, England, shared the news of his stage 4 cancer on Facebook on February 17. In a message to his fans, he wrote: “Please, no boohooing here, just be positive. For me, it’s just another life experience and hurdle…I most definitely am positive about the situation.”
Founding member of the Cure, Lol Tolhurst, confirmed the news of his death via Twitter on Tuesday (Feb. 26) saying: “It’s with a heavy heart, I have to report the passing of a Cure brother. Andy Anderson was A true gentleman and a great musician with a wicked sense of humor which he kept until the end, a testament to his beautiful spirit on the last journey. We are blessed to have known him.”
Anderson joined the Cure in 1983 and played on three of the band’s albums beginning with their fifth studio release, The Top, which peaked at No. 10 on the U.K. Albums Chart. He also played on their singles album Japanese Whispers, and on the band’s first live album Concert: The Cure Live, which was recorded in 1984 at London’s Hammersmith Odeon.
Aside from his work with the Cure, Anderson played with a host of famous musicians including Iggy Pop, Peter Gabriel, Midge Ure, Issac Hayes, Mike Oldfield, the Gun Club’s Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Bronski Beat’s Jimmy Somerville and Glen Matlock from the Sex Pistols.
