SEATTLE (CelebrityAccess) Oak View Group and architecture firms Populous and DLR Group unveiled details of their $660 million renovation to Seattle’s 56-year-old KeyArena to the Seattle Design Commission review meeting Jan. 1 7.
The Seattle City Council voted 7-1 last month to approve and agreement between OVG and the city, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, which cleared the way for OVG to begin renovations of the building. The memorandum of understanding to renovate KeyArena was originally signed by Mayor Jenny Durkan Dec. 6 and, a day later, the NHL said it would consider an expansion bid from Seattle.
OVG presented a 97-page document to the commission, according to K5 News, that included significant alterations like adding three entrances to the arena’s south side and a new atrium for the main ingress. K5 News suggested the draft designs “all play heavily on the arena as a hockey host.”
“We will continue to work closely with the City of Seattle, the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board and the Seattle Design Commission, while honoring the historical and architecturally significant attributes of the building and its community,” OVG said in a statement.
November is the target date for KeyArena’s rebuild, as set by OVG’s Tim Leiweke. The due date is 2020.
