SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (CelebrityAccess) — Kevin Fret, who may have been the first well-known openly gay rapper in Puerto Rico, was shot and killed on Thursday in San Juan.

Fret, who was 24, was reportedly shot eight times at approximately 5:30 AM while driving a motorcycle through San Juan’s densely populated Santurce neighborhood according to Puerto Rican newspaper El Vocero. He was transported to a nearby medical center, where he later died.

According to Billboard, Police said the murder is the 22nd homicide in Puerto Rico in 2019 and currently under investigation by the criminal investigations bureau in San Juan. It is not known whether Fret was targeted specifically.

In a statement to Billboard confirming his client’s death, Fret’s manager Eduardo Rodriguez said, “Kevin was an artistic soul, a big-hearted dreamer. His passion was music, and still had a lot to do. This violence must stop,” Rodriguez said. “There are no words that describe the feeling we have and the pain that causes us to know that a person with so many dreams has to go. We must all unite in these difficult times, and ask for much peace for our beloved Puerto Rico.”

Fret made a name for himself in 2018 as the first openly gay Latin trap artist in Puerto Rico and was known for embracing his sexuality in a culture that is often hostile to LGBTQ people.
