ESTONIA (CelebrityAccess) Pete Shelley, 63, singer, songwriter and frontman for seminal punk band The Buzzcocks, died today of an apparent heart attack in Estonia, according to his brother.
“This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do, is tell you my brother Pete Shelley had a heart attack this morning and passed away,” announced Gary John Mcneish, Shelley’s brother, on Facebook.
The Buzzcocks were formed in Bolton, England, in 1976 by Shelley and Howard Devoto and were considered a major influence on the Manchester music scene. Shelley became the principal singer-songwriter in 1977. The band was signed to United Artists Records on the same day Elvis Presley died in 1977, and released the single “Orgasm Addict,” which was refused play by the BBC. The next single, “What Di I Get?,” reached the UK top 50 chart.
Shelley began a solo career in 1981. The Buzzcocks had re-formed several times over the years, playing a brief set at Riot Fest in Chicago in 2014 and releasing the album The Way the same year.
