LONG ISLAND, N.J. (CelebrityAccess) David Stein, 69, one of the music industry’s biggest journeymen, recently passed away at a Long Island hospital from complications from surgery.
Stein, who died July 23, began his career early, working in the late 60s and early 70s with manager/promoter Sid Bernstein in New York, including Bernstein’s years with Management Three, Jerry Weintraub’s company. He is credited with taking “Cousin Brucee,” aka top 40 DJ Bruce Morrow, from WABC to WNBC (as in the station known for Howard Stern, Don Imus, Maury Povich and the birthplace of the Tonight Show). He is also known from his time as a teenager as having a lasting friendship with Jerry Lewis and helped recruit talent to Lewis’s famed telethon.
Stein maintained a longtime friendship, also, with John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s aide May Pang.
However, Stein is best known as the US manager for the Bay City Rollers during the height of their success and was on hand for their debut on a new show called “Saturday Night Live.”
Stein eventually removed himself from the day-to-day travails of the industry to launch Record Gems, a vinyl, then CD, record-selling and -buying company.
