AMSTERDAM (CelebrityAccess) The three people injured and one person killed when struck by a van outside the Pinkpop festival in Amsterdam may have been sitting in the road, according to eyewitnesses.
A white van had hit the group several hours after Bruno Mars ended his set at the festival. It apparently left the scene at a high speed but the driver eventually turned himself into police in Amsterdam.
Jacqueline Schmeitz, a DJ who had performed at the festival, told RTL Nieuws that she saw a group of people sitting in the road when she drove past shortly before the accident.
“I was not going fast and that was lucky because I saw them in time,” she said. “There were about 12 of them, in dark clothes. … I remember the closest person to where the cars were was a young girl with purple hair.”
Another eyewitness, a taxi driver, told RTL Nieuws he saw a group sitting in a circle on the right lane, playing a game.
“They were lying on the ground, acting daft,” he said.
Police said terrorism has been ruled out as a motive.
The head of the festival, Jan Smeets, said it was the first death in the festival’s 49-year history.
“It’s really terrible, that such a great party should come to such an abrupt end,” Smeets told the BBC.
