RICHMOND, VA (CelebrityAccess) — Cox Communications, one of the largest cable and television service providers in North America has successfully appealed a $1 billion jury verdict that accused the company of failing to take the necessary steps to curb piracy on its network.

On Tuesday, Reuters reported that the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia ruled that the damages awarded in the judgement were not justified and ordered a new trial to be held to determine the appropriate amount.

Cox was found liable in 2019 for copyright infringement by users on Cox’s networks on thousands of works, including copyrights held by major labels such as Sony, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group.

A group of more than 50 labels brought legal action against Cox, alleging that the company failed to adequately address thousands of copyright claims brought against Cox customers and failed to remove users who repeatedly infringed from its platform.

Cox argued that the verdict would force the company to remove thousands of internet users and businesses from the service, often based on “potentially inaccurate allegations.”

Representatives for Cox and the labels did not immediately respond to Reuter’s requests for comment on the decision.
