LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Kanye West and Solange Knowles are both reportedly facing a lawsuit alleging copyright infringement over unauthorized use of a sample from song by musician Prince Phillip Mitchell.
According to TMZ, Mitchell claims that West used the song “If We Can’t Be Lovers” without permission on his hit “Everything I Am”, from the album Graduation.
BMI’s repertoire database currently lists both West and Mitchell with songwriting credits for the track, as well as James Henry Boxley III, Eric T. Sadler, Carlton Ridenhour and George Clinton.
Solange Knowles was also named in the suit after she sampled West’s track for her own song “F*** the Industry” TMZ reported.
According to TMZ, Mitchell is seeking punitive damages and for both artists to stop performing the tracks.
