LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) – Brazilian musician Sérgio Mendes, who brought the sound of bossa nova to the world in the 1960s with his band Brasil ’66, passed away at 83. His family shared that Mendes had been dealing with the long-term effects of COVID-19 before his peaceful passing in Los Angeles. His wife and musical partner of 54 years, Gracinha Leporace Mendes, and their children were by his side.

Mendes last performed in November 2023, delivering sold-out shows in Paris, London, and Barcelona. His influence on music began in Niterói, Brazil, where he was born in 1941 and started studying classical piano before turning to jazz and bossa nova in the 1950s. He collaborated with legends like Cannonball Adderley and Herbie Mann before relocating to the U.S.

After a slow start with his first two albums, the group rebranded as Brasil ’66 and found success with their platinum album, thanks to songs like “Mas Que Nada.” Mendes further solidified his fame after performing “The Look of Love” at the 1968 Academy Awards, which led to a Top 10 hit.

His wife and their five children survive Mendes. His impact on music continues to resonate with fans worldwide.
