NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) — MTV announced the nominees for the 2020 Video Music Awards on Thursday, with Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga leading the charge this year with an astonishing nine nominations each, including picks for video of the year for the same song ‘Rain On Me.’

Billie Eilish and The Weeknd each earned six nominations, including nos for video of the year while Taylor Swift was close behind with five nominations, including a pick for video of the year.

Artist of the year nominees included DaBaby, Justin Bieber, Eminem, Future, Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Post Malone, and The Weeknd.

This year’s MTV Video Music Awards will feature two new categories — “Best Music Video From Home” and “Best Quarantine Performance” — and the awards show will resurrect the “Best Alternative” after it has lain in its grave, unmourned, for more than 20 years.

This year’s MTV VMAs will take place at the Barclays Center on Sunday, August 30, marking the arena’s first event since COVID-19 lockdowns went into place in New York City in March. The event will take place with a limited audience at best.

“Show producers alongside Barclays Center management have been working closely with state and local officials to implement best practices for everyone involved,” according to a statement. “Among the measures all parties involved have aligned on include extensive social distancing procedures, meaningful capacity limitations and the virtualization of components where possible.”
