NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) – Nick Tosches, the acclaimed music journalist and biographer, passed away in New York City Sunday (Oct. 20).

Though the cause of death has not been determined, Tosches had reportedly been ill, according to The New York Times.

Tosches began his career as a music journalist in the late 1960s, alongside critics such as Lester Bangs and Richard Meltzer. The three iconic writers would eventually be labeled “the Noise Boys” for their caustic and disruptive style of journalism.

During the 1970s and ’80s, Tosches wrote for music publications including Rolling Stone and Creem, later becoming a contributing editor to Vanity Fair in 1996.

In addition to his journalistic pursuits, Tosches published 15 books throughout his lifetime, including the novels Cut Numbers (1988), In the Hand of Dante (2002), and Me and the Devil (2012). He was also an accomplished biographer, known for the works Hellfire, his 1982 biography of Jerry Lee Lewis, Dino: Living High in the Dirty Business of Dreams, his 1992 biography on Rat Pack crooner Dean Martin, The Devil and Sonny Liston, his 2000 biography on boxer Sonny Liston, and Where Dead Voices Gather, his 2001 biography on minstrel singer Emmett Miller, among others.

Tosches was 69-year-old.
