LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Disney’s “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” shouldered its way past “Joker” this week to claim the top spot in the domestic box office.
“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” is a sequel to 2014’s “Maleficent” and shakes up the Disney princess formula with a focus on a more nefarious sort of character.
The film stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent and also features Michelle Pfeiffer, Elle Fanning, Imelda Staunton, Robert Lindsay, Lesley Manville, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, David Gyasi, Sam Riley, Jenn Murray, Ed Skrein, and Harris Dickinson.
Joachim Rønning, whose past credits include the award-winning 2012 historical drama “Kon-Tiki” as well as 2017’s entirely lamentable “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” helmed the picture as director.
Internationally, “Maleficent” earned $117.0 million in 56 material territories for a global cume when combined with North America of $153.0 million.
Last week’s champion “Joker” slid in its third week in theaters but still did quite handsomely, earning $29.205 million from North American theaters for a cume through Sunday of $247.229 million. Worldwide, “Joker” $77.8M on 18,978 screens this weekend for an overseas cume of $490.3M and the worldwide running tally of $737.5M in just three weeks.
“Zombieland: Double Tap” came in at third. A sequel to the 2009 comedic take on the zombie pic “Zombieland” the film features a cast led by Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Emma Stone. For its North American debut, “Zombieland: Double Tap” earned $26.725 million along with $5.3M this weekend from 2,200+ screens in 17 international territories with a wider opening to come.
