NEW JERSEY (CelebrityAccess) – The 36th annual MTV Video Music Awards landed at the Prudential Center in New Jersey Monday night, and what a show it was.

Hosted by comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, this year’s event was a spectacular marriage of eye-popping visuals and standout performances.

Taylor Swift, who went into last night’s show tied with Ariana Grande for ten nominations apiece, kicked things off with her recent hit “You Need to Calm Down” and the first-ever live performance of “Lover.” Other memorable performances followed from Lizzo who delivered a mashup of her hits “Truth Hurts” and “Good As Hell” in front of a giant booty balloon, Lil Nas X who took to the stage to perform his “Old Town Road” followup “Panini,” The Jonas Brothers who delivered a hometown spectacle with their latest hits “Sucker” and  “Only Human,” Megan Thee Stallion who performed a medley of “Hot Girl Summer” and “Cash Shit,” Rosalía who performed her duet with Ozuna, “Yo x Ti, Tu x Me” and “Aute Cuture,” Miley Cyrus who performed her new single “Slide Away” backed by a string section, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello who delivered a steamy rendition of their hit duet ” “Señorita,” H.E.R who performed her hit “Anti,” Normani who delivered her hit “Motivation,” Big Sean and A$AP Ferg who performed their new song “Bezerk,” and Bad Bunny and J Balvin who performed their Oasis hit “Que Pretendes” decked out in cartoonish costumes flanked by a twerking inflatable dinosaur.

But, the standout performance of the evening was fittingly delivered by this year’s Video Vanguard Award winner Missy Elliot, who blew away all those watching with a jaw-dropping, expertly choreographed, career-spanning medley that included all of her biggest hits. Oh, and a cameo performance from a now all grown-up Alyson Stoner, who fans recognized as the little girl who danced in Missy’s 2002 “Work It” video.
