MAKHANDA, South Africa (CelebrityAccess) — A stage musician was hospitalized after he was reportedly struck by a crossbow bolt in a stage illusion gone wrong.
According to Newsweek, Entertainer Li Lau, who performs under the stage name “One Crazy China,” was injured in an onstage accident at the 2019 National Arts Festival in Makhanda, South Africa.
Lau was performing with magician Brendon Peel in a show titled “Carnival Sideshow and Other Magical Things” when he was struck in the head by a single crossbow bolt.
Local newspaper The Daily Dispatch said the audience was asked to leave the theater after the incident, while Lau was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
“We are informed that the crossbow did not penetrate his skull, and Mr. Lau is fully conscious,” Tony Lankester, the art organization’s chief exec told the Daily Dispatch. “The festival deeply regrets the incident and is in conversation with the performers to establish what went wrong with the illusion.”
In a statement to Newsweek, through Brendon Peel, Lau said: “I’m all good and well following the minor mishap with the escape illusion. I wish to help clarify that Brendon Peel is in no way responsible or to blame and did not physically aim or hold the crossbow during the stunt.”
