TEXAS (CelebrityAccess) Whiskey Myers is one of those bands that has built its career over a span of a decade, rather than coming out of the gate with a big single and appearances on late night TV.
The band, born out of Palestine, Texas, released its debut album in 2008 although it had a long preamble to that moment. Its most recent album, Mud, was released in 2016 and the newest album, simply called Whiskey Myers, is set to drop Sept. 27 with the track “Die Rockin’” already out.
The band has played more than 2,000 live shows since 2008 and have sold out 95 percent of their headlining shows over the past two years. Mud reached No. 1 on the iTunes country chart with single “Stone” hitting Top 10 all genre.
USA Today describes the band, led by frontman Cody Cannon, as “a riff-heavy blend of Southern rock and gritty country that has earned comparisons to the Allman Brothers Band and Led Zeppelin,” with Rolling Stone noting “it’s the seminal combination of twang and crunchy rock & roll guitars that hits a perfect sweet spot.”
The band is featured on Seasons 1 & 2 of Paramount Network’s Kevin Costner hit show “Yellowstone” as well as the Renée Zellweger-led Netflix series “What/If.” Esquire said, “Whiskey Myers are the real damn deal.”
The band is expected to open for the Rolling Stones on June 25 in Chicago, one of several honored guests during the Stones’ North American tour including Nathaniel Rateliff, Gary Clark Jr., Juanes and Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real.
The band is composed of Cody Cannon (lead vocals and acoustic guitar), John Jeffers (lead guitar, slide guitar, lap steel guitar, vocals), , Cody Tate (lead and rhythm guitar), Jeff Hogg (drums), Tony Kent (percussion/drums), and Jamey Gleaves (bass).
We spoke briefly with Cody and John.
With the Rolling Stones show and a new album coming out, we like to think your career is hitting another level. Would that be at least somewhat correct?
Cody: Um, somewhat correct, man. We’re fortunate to make a living and having a career for a long time but, yeah, lately, I guess it’s been kind of on the upswing.
How did the Rolling Stones show come about?
Cody: We played Stagecoach and their manager, or somebody, was there and one thing led to another and they just reached out to us and gave us a bunch of dates, and asked which dates we could cancel and come on board. We got excited and one thing led to another and we ended up on June 25 playing with them in Chicago at Soldier Field.
Is the new album, Whiskey Myers, produced by Dave Cobb, like your last one?
Cody: Nah, we did it ourselves. But our last two were produced by Dave Cobb.
John: We just gathered enough tools from Dave and the previous records where we thought it was time to take it into our own hands and do what we could do with it. We’re pretty proud of it.
How long have you been working with Triple 8 Management and Bruce Kalmick?
Cody: We’ve been working with them since we started. It was called KB Talent back a long, long time ago. We were one of the first bands Bruce Kalmick managed when he switched over from being a booking agent. We’ve been with them since we started.
John: Twelve years.
When you say starting out, does that mean, you know, club dates in Texas?
John: I think we only had a demo and, somehow, Bruce learned about it and called us. We just kind of hauled ass down to Austin and got on board with him and nothing ever changed since. Same band, same management. We’re still independent.
Cody: We had just started and were playing venues around where we were from, bars and stuff like that. I guess word of mouth got around to him because of that. I guess that’s what happens when you have your ear to the ground in that business. Yeah, I don’t even think we had an album out then.
So it just seems like things about to explode.
Cody: Yeah man. All the shows have been sold out, so that’s good. You just keep your nose to the grindstone and keep working.
