LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — Another weekend, another superhero movie. This time, it was Disney’s Captain Marvel taking the box office by storm.
Captain Marvel opened to an astonishing $153m in North America and $455m worldwide, across 54 territories for its debut. The weekend’s results are the second-best ever for a superhero flick, behind only Avengers: Infinity War, and the sixth highest opening of all time, according to estimates compiled by comScore.
Captain Marvel also hit the ground running in China, where its debut proved to be the biggest opening weekend for any of the Marvel Comics Universe films, grossing more than $89m in the market.
Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson in the lead role, as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.
Set in 1995, the film follows Carol Danvers as she becomes Captain Marvel amidst a protracted conflict between two alien species.
How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World continued to perform a the box office as well, earning $14.7M from North American theaters and $14.7M worldwide over the weekend, taking its worldwide cume to almost half a billion.
In North America, Tyler Perry’s last entry into the Madea franchise, Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral, held on at number 3, earning $12.1M.
Internationally, Lionsgate’s Green Book took the #3 spot, earning $14.8M over the weekend, according to estimates by comScore.
